- Cecilia Pitino Far Lunari
MM&b - Roma
"Far
Lunari" is simply contemporary Sicilian music, a meeting-place
for the perfumes, the passions and the hopes of Sicily, and glimpses
of the Mediterranean of which the island has always represented the
geographical centre and the principle cultural work-shop. Seven new
pieces and three remakes of classics to show that globalization does
not necessarily pervert individual cultures; rather, it enriches them.
In fact, what is most striking and astonishing about this work is the
singular naturalness with which, in "Far Lunari", the languages,
sonorities and traditions of the Mediterranean mingle with and are infected
by the rhythms of our time, without sacrificing any of the crude and
authentic 'Sicilian-ness', which is untainted by the stereotypes that
have too often confined it to the realms of folklore. The fine words
of Giancarlo Susanna in his review of "Spunta 'na Rosa' return
to mind: The warm and embracing sound, and the passionate vocal ability
of Cecilia Pitino remind us of the records that the unforgettable Rosa
Balistreri recorded with Fonit Cetra in the 70s; this is not a question
of superficial resemblance, but of profound intention, and of love for
one's own land.
The project "Far Lunari" was born from the
deeply-felt artistic collaboration of Cecilia Pitino with Dounia, a
Sicilian-Palestinian group of musicians and experimentalists who are
fresh from other important experiences such as that of Kunsertu, with
some of whom she had already worked, on their debuts and other occasions.
Dounia were responsible for the artistic production of "Far Lunari",
and the writer Sal Costa composed the lyrics of the new pieces. Cecilia's
great interpretation adapts itself well to the sonorities and the texts,
and represents at the same time a pole of attraction. "Far Lunari",
according to Sal Costa, is worn by her like a garment. And if the poetical
themes have not changed since "Spunta 'na Rosa', if the passions
and the sufferings of man are still at the centre of the scene, the
musical dress is scantier, slighter, and every sound, even the smallest,
acquires a fundamental value.
